How much do mahjong lessons cost in Seattle?
Less than almost anywhere: Stroum JCC charges $15 (members) to $35 (non-members) for a monthly beginner class, Seattle Parks runs $24 sessions, and the Center for Active Living charges a small fee. The Seattle Mahjong Club and the Riichi club are free with donations welcome.
Do I need to know how to play before my first lesson?
No. The SJCC class teaches the basics in a single session before opening the tables, the parks lessons assume nothing, and both free clubs advertise teaching for new players. Show up knowing nothing and you'll leave knowing how to build a wall.
Are tiles and the current mahjong card provided?
Yes. SJCC brings full sets for its classes, the Seattle Mahjong Club provides tiles for its Taiwanese-style tables, and the Riichi club supplies sets at both weekly meetups. Parks sessions can point you to a loaner card if you don't have the current one.
How long does it take to learn mahjong?
One session gets you dealing; a month of weekly play gets you comfortable. SJCC's one-and-done format is built for that first session, and the Riichi club's regulars are famously patient with newcomers — several of its current members learned at the club.
Is mahjong for older adults, or can anyone learn?
The parks and SJCC offerings skew 50+, and Seattle's mahjong community has a strong older generation. But the Riichi club's two weekly meetups pull heavily from the 20s–40s tech crowd, and the SeaTac club teaches all comers. Every option here is open to anyone.
